Preston family papers [manuscript] 1756-1959.

Correspondence [transcripts (typewritten)] commissions in the Virginia militia, and land grants of this family from Botetourt, and Montgomery Cos., Va., chiefly from 1756-91. Correspondents include: James Preston of Derry, Ireland, William Preston, John Preston, and Robert Preston in Virginia. Later correspondents are Letitia Preston Floyd, and William Alfred Preston. Also genealogical data about the Preston, Patton, and Floyd families, with information and news clippings of the Preston family homes Greenfield, Botetourt Co., Va., and Smithfield, Montgomery Co., Va.; and the Moore family home, Chelsea, King William Co., Va. Of interest are a transcript of a letter regarding defense against the Indians in Russell County, 1792, and a Civil War pardon signed in the name of Andrew Johnson by acting Secretary of State William Hunter.

William Preston (ca. 1729-1783) held various county offices and militia offices. His sons were John Preston (1764-1827), who was a member of the Virginia General Assembly and treasurer of Virginia, and Francis Preston (1765-1836). Francis Preston was born in Botetourt County, graduated from the College of William and Mary and practiced law in Montgomery and Washington counties.
